- Check carefully if the vehicle has scratches on the bodywork or any type of dents or damage, and do not forget to write down everything in the inspection of the car.
- In case of accident, make sure you call the police and make the B.O. (boletim de ocorrência), which is a type of police report. The rental car company will ask for the B.O. in order to cover the eventual damage.
- Regarding the insurance policy, it is highly recommended that you get full coverage, or the lowest liability charge as possible. It is a little more expensive, but you will be more protected.
- Make sure you have a 24hrs phone number for mechanical problems and toll services.
- The major rental car companies in Brazil (Avis, Hertz, and National) are more prepared to handle foreign costumers that don’t speak Portuguese. Smaller companies might be a little cheaper, but their services don’t compare with the big ones.
- It is nearly impossible to rent a car in Brazil without a major credit card.
